Description
Bernardus van de Laar (Rotterdam 1804 - Rotterdam 1872) started as an apprentice at the house painters company of his father. During wintertime he practiced at the art society "Hierdoor tot Hooger" and received lessons from Cornelis Bakker (1771-1849). Van de Laar  painted cityscapes and church interiors, mostly in collaboration with his brother J.H. van de Laar and W.H. Schmidt. Also, he traveled through Belgium and Germany.
 
Between 1832 and 1843 he exhibited his works in The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Drawings from his hand are in the collections of the Rijksprentenkabinet and the Kröller-Müller museum.
 
This painting will be included in the publication Op zoek naar werk. De productieve kunstenaarsfamilie Hauck-Bakker-Van de Laar in Rotterdam, 1770-1920by Wilma van Giersbergen.
