The bureau is lacquered overall with Chinese scenes in tones of gold on a black ground and is standing on sculpted ball an claw feet with the mask of t’ao t’ieh. The feet are marked with Chinese characters. The fall front, drawers and sides are decorated with Chinese pagodas, pavilions and houses surrounded by trees and mountains. The interior consists of twelve drawers decorated with flowers, a secret compartment and two standing compartments flanking a locked door decorated with a vase full of flowers. The inside of the fall front is adorned with elegant foliage, flowers and interlocking rings. The interiors of the drawers are finished with gold powder lacquer.
