Description

Claes Jacobsz van der Heck (1575, Alkmaar – 1652, Alkmaar), was a Dutch Golden Age painter specialized in landscapes. He helped set up the Alkmaar Guild of Saint Luke in 1632. He was the most successful Dutch Golden Age painter in Alkmaar. Many of his work is part of the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.
This painting shows a landscape of Egmond aan Zee as it looked before the storm in 1717 which washed away all the houses between the sea and the church. This storm weakened the foundations of the church which collapsed in 1741 after several storms and floodings.
